well, if you keep misspelling then you get in a bad habit of it. as long as you know how to spell right if you needed to, it's ok. At one of my jobs we have to document a lot of things in communication logs, progress notes etc...it drives me nuts when people misspell easy words. Hello..table is not spelled "tabel" you get my drift.

Well, that's part of the problem. At some point it becomes quite hard to understand, especially if people are leaving out punctuation. There have been a few replies on this site that can be taken a couple different ways depending on where the sentences were supposed to end.

The other problem is that even if you CAN understand what someone said, it may not be EASY to understand. For me, something as small as using "2" to mean "to" or "too" requires that I work harder to parse a sentence.

I don't jump on peaple for the occasonal mispalling - it's easy enough to do! :)

The trouble is when people simple discard any attempt to write actual English. Capitalization, punctuation, and grammar are things that help make what you're saying clear and also make it EASIER for your reader to understand you.

Something as simple as a comma can make all the difference in how someone understands your sentence.

And since we have nothing BUT writing on the internet - no tone, no expression in the voice - there is nothing else that can help people understand.

I agree with you, but it doesn't make me all 'hulk' if people do misspell words. it's just really depressing when I go on MSN and everyone's like "ROFL heyz supp? BRB LOL noob!"

I am REALLY sorry to point this out but, you need to make an attempt too. When you are making an opinion, especially on that subject, you might want to spell your words right. Grammar is spelled "Grammar" not "Gramar". Gramar sounds like one of them cheesy oatmeal cookies.

I must agree that people should use proper spelling/grammar/vocab so that others can understand it. I absolutely hate chat speak! >[~ I prefer speaking/writing/typing English, thank you very much.

However, I don't really care if someone makes a mistake. We're all human and to err is human, right? But once again, I do tend to get really ticked off when people purposely spell words wrong or don't bother to capitalize anything, or worse... USE ALL CAPS FOR THEIR ENTIRE SENTENCES. Ugh... See how horrid that was? It makes it hard to read, don't you know? XP~

Ugh. I despite chatspeak, but that doesn't mean I don't make mistakes. Occasionally, there'd a typo or two, or when I'm eating while chatting, I'll try to make my typing as short and simple as possible. It's okay to use chatspeak, but you should attempt to type properly, so people could understand.

Usually, when people type in chatspeak, I get the feeling that they're slobs, so I guess it's also a part of showing personality? I think proper grammar and all make you seem neat and clean, rather than sluggish. Don't know, it's probably just me.

And especially when the techer gives us 26 words 2 rite 2 times each!(1 time she made us rite them 4 times each!(it sucked)) plus it's not like were taking a spelling test geez...i think ppl have the rite 2 type however they want!!!!!!!!!!!it doesn't matter at all!!!!!!!but like sum other ppl said, when it becomes incomprehensible that is when i get mad!like i said earlier (5 days ago) the moral of it all is, that if u don't like chatspeak DON'T CHAT AT ALL!!!!the person that posted this opinion should really get over his or herself!!!!!

It is up to the individual to decide where they want to be in life. If they are fine with just passing good habits up, habits that could lead to greater things and a better impression, then that is their decision.

I actually forget to type things like 2 instead of to, or too when I'm chatting to people online. I've been hardwired to spell correctly

I always see "2" as a number and it takes my brain a sec to read it as "to" or "too"...so it ends up being SLOWER for me!

im not trying to be a hiprocrit but.... it is something we all should work on because for a honors english student typing million of paper and gets a D or lower because of the careless mistakes of replacing the word YOUR with ur... and too; two; to with 2... it just shows the world intellingence is starting to decrease.

Alright, I know that no one wants to hear my opinion, but deal. I'm only 16, and I see quite a lot of "ur" and "2" used in papers, which is annoying. Its gotten to the point that it isn't just used in chat anymore, it's used in school papers! I'm sorry, but when it gets to that point, people need to start trying to use proper grammar. If you slip up, that's one thing, but jeez people... Come on!

Why wouldn't we want to hear your opinion? You make an excellent point about the dangers of "netspeak" slipping into formal schoolwork.

it's bad practice for school... so.... i didn't use to do it, cause i wanna be an author, but i started to do it cause it's easier. and got yelled at my teacher for writing that way in my papers.

I find it so annoying.

Writing "to" instead of "2" and "are" instead of "r" greatly increases the speed of reader comprehension because of the way the brain processes words and language. It's well worth an extra keypress here and there, especially since most of society still values spelling and clarity, and "practicing wrong" will cause chatspeak to creep into other areas of your life.

I'm not saying it's *hard* to read. But it does slow down the *rate* at which you read, and/or require more attention and focus than reading a paragraph full of normal typoes.
